Labor Dispute Over Ferry Service

October 9, 2006 - KGO: The two week labor disagreement between the new operator of the Alcatraz ferry and the former operator is affecting not only tourists, but another group of people.

A day of solidarity for indigenous people suffered a fracture in San Francisco today. Participants had to decide whether to rally around their own struggle or to support someone else's.

Traditionally indigenous people travel to Alcatraz every year to counter the celebration surrounding Columbus Day.

The spiritual ceremony commemorates the fight for the rights of Native Americans. They've held it on Alcatraz every year since 1969, when Indians took over the rock and claimed it as sacred ground.

But this year, going to Alcatraz meant crossing a picket line. Instead of taking a stance they decided to strike a compromise. Some participated in a ceremony on the rock while others celebrated on the Embarcadero.
